Drywood termites, which live entirely inside wood with no soil contact, round out the picture — they show up mostly in the southern coastal parishes, including around Lake Charles and the New Orleans metro, infesting attics, trim and furniture.

Geographically, the heaviest pressure runs along the I-10 corridor and the Gulf-facing parishes: New Orleans and its suburbs, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Lake Charles all sit in prime Formosan territory. When Termites Swarm in Louisiana

Swarm season in Louisiana is a spectacle homeowners in most states never see. Formosan swarmers take flight at dusk on warm, humid evenings from late April through July, peaking in May — locals call the first big flights “Mother’s Day swarms.” Tens of thousands of winged termites boil out of mature colonies and spiral toward streetlights and lit windows. A swarm outdoors is not an emergency by itself — swarmer termites do not bite, sting or eat wood. Save a few insects or wings in a sealed bag for identification and schedule a termite inspection promptly: in Louisiana’s climate, waiting a season is rarely a good trade.
