Types of Termites in Hawaii

Two species do the overwhelming share of the damage:

• Formosan subterranean termite. Nests in the soil but also builds carton nests inside walls and roofs, so a colony can persist even in a high-rise. Look for mud tubes on foundations, hollow-sounding framing and evening swarms around lights. Control usually means soil treatment, bait systems, or both.
• West Indian drywood termite. Lives entirely inside dry wood — framing, trim, furniture — with no soil contact at all. Its calling card is frass: tiny six-sided pellets collecting in piles below infested wood. Realistically, termite risk in Hawaii is high on every major island — Oahu, Maui, Hawaii (the Big Island) and Kauai all have established Formosan and drywood populations. Pressure tends to be worst in warm, wet, low-elevation areas: the windward sides of the islands, rainy communities like Hilo, and the older, densely built neighborhoods of Honolulu where the ground termite has been established longest. Newer, drier leeward developments are not exempt — drywood termites in particular do not care how wet the soil is, only that the wood is available.

There is no true swarm season here — the tropics keep termites active all year. The visible peak is Formosan subterranean swarms on warm, still evenings from May through September, when thousands of winged reproductives cloud around streetlights, porch lights and windows. Drywood termites also release swarmers through the year, typically at dusk. A swarm indoors, or piles of discarded wings on a windowsill, means a colony is established in or immediately around the structure — that is the moment to schedule a termite inspection, not to wait for the season to pass.
